Notes: Students took a break from Romeo and Juliet and spent some time on essay writing. Students were given a model to work from for their Catcher in the Rye essay and reviewed MLA format. We reviewed the components of the essay and students were asked to give the essay a grade. Students then had some time to work on their essay.

HWK: Good copy of Catcher in the Rye Essay- Tuesday May 22nd.

Literature Circles- Book needs to be read by Tuesday May 22nd- they will start working on their collective essay on Tuesday.

Notes: For homework, finish writing a new ending to Lord of the Flies: replace chapter 12. . Every evening students should be reading the next chapter of Lord of the Flies. Students will be working in groups on the following tasks: examining character development; OR examining how the events and behaviours in the novel might reflect how humans really are; OR how symbols, behaviours, events and character traits reflect a civilizing instinct.

Previous task: students worked on individual journal responses: examining how juxtaposition works in chapter one in terms of the following:

1. Leadership intelligence/Leadership aggression
2. Paradise/Wilderness
3. Playful Adventure/Survival
4. Innocence/Corruption
Students should be reading and making notes for their ISU Book Report, due May 28--the last week in May. Students have detailed guidelines.

For their ISU portfolioes, students have been provided with expectatons, rubrics, model answers and were also presented with still images as well as a slide show. Students have also answered questions about portfolio expectations: what they are, why they are important, what they should show and how to prepare one. Throughout the term, there will be no extra homework assigned beyond all the course expectations outlined during the first two weeks of class: 8 Applied Art History tasks, 4 artist's statements and 7 additional portfolio pieces.
