Why Choose Us
The Chisholm Advantage
The Chisholm experience offers a unique educational advantage over the conventional public and private school environments. On one campus, three integrated services work closely to maximize student learning and success: Chisholm Academy High School, Chisholm Psychology Department and Chisholm Remedial/Tutoring Services.
The Academy High School is more than a “traditional” secondary school, offering a full range of courses leading to post secondary education, rigorous academics, small classes, individualized programming and extensive educational support. Our students thrive in the Academy environment, whether they struggle with learning disabilities or other impediments to learning that previously blocked their success in larger school environments.
Our teachers rely on the expertise of the Psychology Department in developing an Individual Education Plan for each student and implementing appropriate accommodations. The staff of Chisholm’s Psychology Department has expertise in developing programs for students with learning disabilities as well as the assessment and consultation of learning, vocational and personal issues.
The Remedial/Tutoring Services provide further support through after-school and summer school programs.
Experience
Throughout its 40 year history, Chisholm has helped to teach and graduate thousands of students who needed smaller classroom environments, more flexible programs, or assistance with learning disabilities
Results
Our assessments are respected and accepted by private and public schools. In our high school, Chisholm graduates enjoy outstanding academic success with an acceptance rate of 92% to the post-secondary institution of their choice.
Accreditation
Chisholm is registered and inspected as a private high school by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training, and is authorized to grant credits at all levels in all subjects. Senior members of our Psychology Department are registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
Parental Involvement
Parent contact is encouraged and is a key component of success at Chisholm Academy High School and in our Tutoring Service. Through constant communication, we work together to help our students achieve academic and personal success. Parents play a key role in the psychoeducational assessments performed by our Psychology staff, with two sessions devoted to their concerns.
Teacher/Student Ratio
With average classroom sizes of less than 12 students, Chisholm Academy High School also has several smaller classes where students can be taught in groups of four or less depending on their needs. In our tutoring program, students are carefully grouped with never more than 3 students in a class.
Specialized Programming
Our high school programs and tutoring services offer a full complement of courses including courses aimed at preparation for the Grade 10 literacy Test and an individualized Co-operative Education program. Please see What We Offer for more details on all of our programs.
Our Staff
Our directors, Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Bryntwick, both hold doctoral degrees in Psychology and each has over 30 years experience in the field of education and clinical psychology. Our supervisory staff hold advanced degrees and our teachers are certified and experienced in working with students with different learning styles. All staff have continuous training in the areas of special education and curriculum.
